Gill eventually made his international debut on December 8, 2019 in the third ODI against West Indies in Cuttack.

Batting at number 3, Gill scored 9 runs on debut as India sealed a 2-1 series win. In his second ODI against Australia in January 2020, Gill notched up his maiden fifty with a composed 33-ball 50. Although Gill did not convert his starts, he had marked his arrival on the international stage.

Test Debut in Australia

Shubman Gill received a surprise call up to India’s Test squad for the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar trophy in Australia after Rohit Sharma was ruled out due to injury. Gill was initially not in the reckoning for Tests but his solid technique catapulted him into the playing XI.

He made his Test debut in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne batting at number 6. In his very first Test innings, Gill scored an assured 45 and was India’s top scorer in the first innings. Gill followed it up with 35 in the second innings as India pulled off a stunning 8 wicket win.

Gill continued to impress in his debut Test series with another fifty in Sydney as well as a gutsy 91 in the Gabba chase on the final day. His performances established him as India’s newest Test opener alongside Rohit Sharma in Australia. Gill finished as India’s second-highest run-getter with 259 runs at an average of 51.80.
